Kasane, Yakushima, 2026
House for Not A Hotel, selected project
Inspired by Japanese domestic traditions and built with dark wood, steel, glass, and paper, Kasane transforms with the seasons. Panels slide open, rooms become pavilions, and the boundary between inside and outside quietly disappears. Composed of a sequence of minimal rooms, the architecture slowly shifts from enclosed, intimate spaces toward openness and transparency. Fragmented yet cohesive, the house approaches the landscape without touching it, allowing nature to permeate every space. Fully openable rooms, repeated elements, and careful minimalism create a domestic experience in quiet harmony with the surrounding environment of Yakushima.
